Based on a survey of the consumption of the arts during the reign of Frederik II (1559-1588), a number of issues are raised concerning the multiplicity, function, production and diffusion of art and architecture, partly inspired by recent research in European court culture during Early Modern Times in general, and in the court life of Frederik II in particular. Finally it is questioned, whether the use of the term 'Maecenate' in relation to the king's use of the arts should not be redefined to the more adequate 'Strategic consumption'.
